Levenshulme Old Library Meet Up

Levenshulme Old Library is holding a Membership Meet Up on Sunday 23 March at 14.00.

Levenshulme Old Library has always been shaped by its community, and we want you to be part of its future. Our next Members’ Meeting is your chance to have your say, share ideas and help us plan what happens next in this historic space.

The theme for this meeting is ‘heritage’, we’ll explore the building’s history, its current place in our community, our plans for the future and some of the challenges we face.

Our building has been at the heart of our community for over 120 years. As Manchester’s oldest Carnegie library building, it has played a crucial role in providing educational and cultural enrichment. After its closure in 2016, the community came together to save it and Levenshulme Library was given a second life, reopening the doors as Levenshulme Old Library in 2018, operating as a community arts centre. Since then the space has been used to co-create with our community, acting as home to Levenshulme Fringe Festival, community radio station ALLFM, Levy Queer Club, the Roma Health Hub and hundreds of other groups, activities, opportunities and events.

However, we find people are often surprised to learn that, despite all their hard work and success in running the space, the community group do not own the building or have any kind of formal lease in place. Since 2016 we’ve been working with the council on the Community Asset Transfer (CAT) process to secure the building’s future here, but nearly a decade on, it’s a process which is still ongoing. Why has it taken so long? What do these delays mean for the building’s future? What can we, as a community, do to navigate these delays? And how can we ensure that Levenshulme Old Library remains a thriving and integral part of our community for another 120 years?

We’ll be discussing these questions and more. The meeting will also include a tour of the building, a presentation on its history, updates on our plans, and space for sharing your thoughts and ideas on how we can shape the future of this important space.

Come along and play a role in shaping Levenshulme Old Library. Together, we can keep this community space thriving!

Election Hustings 2023

Levenshulme Community Association is delighted to announce hustings for the local elections on Thursday 27 April 2023.

This is an opportunity for anyone to come along and ask questions of the candidates. The hustings will be held at St Peter’s Church on Stockport Road (opposite Arcadia Library and Leisure Centre).

18.30 Levenshulme hustings

20.00 Burnage hustings

All candidates (listed below) have been invited to attend personally or send a representative. The hustings will be chaired by Rev George Reeves.

Levenshulme is one of the few areas that still holds hustings. We hold hustings for both Burnage Ward and Levenshulme Ward because the Levenshulme community stretches across the Ward boundaries. The LCA has done so for many years and we believe it is an important event to enable residents to hold candidates to account and hear what their ideas are for our community.

Everyone is welcome. We hope to see you at the hustings.

Remember that you must bring photo ID to the polling station to vote. This is a new requirement imposed by the government. You can find out further information HERE. A full list of which forms of ID will be accepted is available HERE.
